Motorcycles and potholes are a dangerous combination. The City of Kamloops recommends that citizens use the myKamloops app to report potholes.
Riding Season Is Here
March 1st is my unofficial date for when riding season starts. It’s a mental comfort on some of the cold dark days of winter. One of my favorite sounds is the street sweepers going by.
Pothole Season Is Here Too
For some reason, potholes are an endless hazard in Kamloops. Whether you ride a motorcycle, ride an e-bike, or drive a car, potholes can ruin your day.
Why Me?
You may wonder why it seems to be our responsibility to report potholes. Aren’t there city vehicles travelling these same roads? Why can’t they pay attention and report the potholes? How has it become my job?
These are good questions. With an ever growing city staff and payroll, and a commitment to service excellence, you’d think they could handle this basic responsibility.
Why Not Me?
Picture this. Your friend is riding down Westsyde Rd, at a leisurely 80 km/h with the rest of the traffic. He hits a pot hole that suddenly appears under the car in front of him. He loses control and crashes. The truck behind him is tailgating, can’t stop in time, and runs over him and his bike.
Who’s at fault? Is that the first question you are going to ask? Probably not. You’re probably going to ask if your friend is alive, if he’s going to survive, how his family is coping, and things like that.
Later, you might start thinking about who’s fault it is, or how it could have been prevented. If you or I saw the pothole before, either of us could have reported it using the app. Let’s look out for each other and use that app!
